Just like with a full physical with your primary care physician, your eyes need checked regularly to make sure they are healthy. There is more involved with going to your eye doctor than making sure your vision is clear. Your optometrist can also check for things like diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, or abnormalities in your optic nerves, all things that can be treated when detected early to prevent series vision problems down the road. For healthy adults, it is recommended their vision is checked every one to two years. Due to growth spurts, anyone under the age of 18 should be checked once a year. Diabetics should have their eyes checked every six months to once a year.
